The innovation extends the latest generation of Volvo’s I-Roll technology and builds on the company’s I-See predictive cruise control system. For the first time in the heavy-truck segment, the engine can now be temporarily switched off during downhill runs — meaning zero fuel consumption and no CO₂ tailpipe emissions in those moments, according to Volvo Trucks.
How it works
The function activates automatically at speeds of around 60 km/h, provided that certain conditions such as topography and ambient temperature are suitable. Volvo says the feature can deliver an additional one percent reduction in fuel use and emissions.
In practice, this means that:
- The engine automatically shuts off when the truck is travelling downhill;
- During these phases, the engine produces no fuel consumption or emissions;
- Drivers are advised to remain alert to downhill gradients and environmental conditions to maximise the system’s efficiency.
The new stop/start function will be available in the Volvo FH and Volvo FH Aero models equipped with the 13-litre diesel engine.
