The newly added duo-trailers, each 31.75 metres long with eight axles and a load capacity of up to 46 tonnes, are expected to reduce CO₂ emissions by up to 30% compared to conventional vehicles. The 25.25-metre-long mega-trucks, which offer a 65% increase in payload, are projected to lower emissions by up to 20%.

XPO is already deploying the new vehicles on key freight corridors across Spain, including routes serving automotive plants, logistics hubs, and port facilities. The company is also using duo-trailers on cross-border routes throughout the Iberian Peninsula.

The expansion follows XPO’s early involvement in the Spanish government’s initial testing phase for high-capacity vehicles. According to the company, its experience has enabled wider deployment of these configurations in alignment with national and European sustainability targets.

“With the expansion to 22 duo-trailer units, we are not only increasing our operational capacity, but also continuing our commitment to reduce the carbon footprint of all our logistics operations,” said Jorge Rodriguez, Operations Director for Southern Europe and Morocco at XPO Logistics.

The company is also working on technical developments to improve safety and interoperability, including the use of box-trailer configurations for enhanced freight protection and compatibility with rail transport systems to support multimodal logistics.
