Bidcorp UK has placed its first major order with Carrier Transicold, selecting over 100 engineless Syberia refrigeration units as part of a fleet renewal programme aimed at improving operational efficiency and reducing emissions across its temperature-controlled distribution operations.
The order includes 112 Syberia 18i Twincool units and one mono-temperature Syberia 11, mounted on 18- and 26-tonne Scania rigid trucks with insulated bodies supplied by Gray & Adams. The new vehicles will begin replacing older models fitted with traditional diesel-powered refrigeration systems and will operate from Bidfood depots nationwide.
The Syberia units are powered by Carrier’s Eco-Drive system, which draws energy directly from the truck’s Euro VI engine via a hydraulic pump and generator. This setup enables full refrigeration capacity even at standard idle speed, eliminating the need for a separate diesel engine and allowing for quieter, PIEK-compliant operation below 60 dB(A).
Bidcorp UK cited the units’ cooling performance, rapid pull-down speeds, and low noise levels as key reasons for the investment. The system’s electric architecture also eliminates belts and pulleys, improving uptime and reliability. With compact designs mounted above the cab and behind aerodynamic deflectors, the Syberia units also contribute to fuel efficiency on urban routes.
“We were impressed by the Syberia’s cooling performance, rapid pull-down speeds and aerodynamic design,” said Faye Reeve, Head of Procurement at Bidcorp UK. “Combined with Carrier’s support network, the system offers clear operational advantages.”
The new trucks will join Bidcorp UK’s 1,500-vehicle fleet and are expected to remain in service for around 10 years, covering multi-drop routes six days a week and clocking up to 25,000 miles annually. They will serve a wide range of customers across the foodservice, healthcare, and hospitality sectors.
This latest investment supports Carrier’s broader 2030 goal of helping customers avoid more than one gigaton of greenhouse gas emissions. Each unit is backed by Carrier’s BluEdge full-service maintenance package, which includes annual testing, certification, and 24/7 incident response.
