DB Cargo is selling more activities of its Spanish subsidiary Transfesa Logistics. As the maritime group Boluda Corporación Marítima announced, it is taking over the domestic activities of Transfesa. This includes maintenance, shunting, and terminal services. With this move, Boluda strengthens its intermodal logistics services on the Iberian Peninsula.
“Rail freight establishes itself as a sustainable and efficient mode of transport and becomes a strategic pillar of our intermodal logistics,” said Ignacio Boluda, Chairman of Boluda Shipping. Details about the purchase price were not disclosed.
This acquisition comes at a time when the transportation sector is facing potential disruptions. For instance, Italy gears up for major strike, which could create further logistical challenges.
The sale is part of DB Cargo’s recovery program, which is currently undergoing an extensive restructuring. As early as May 2025, the railway subsidiary divested its shares in two container terminals in Cologne and Düsseldorf. In June, the sale of the Spanish automotive logistics subsidiary Semat to the French Groupe CAT followed.
Locomotives and wagons transition to Boluda
DB Cargo holds 84 percent of Transfesa Logistics. With the current sale, Transfesa is almost entirely giving up its rail business – except for the automotive sector and international rail freight between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of Europe. The deal includes the company’s locomotives and wagons, except for car transporters and vehicles for international traffic.
According to statistics from the Spanish National Commission on Markets and Competition (CNMC), Transfesa had a market share of 5.2 percent in national rail freight in 2024 and moved 781,000 tonnes of goods – a decrease of 22.6 percent compared to the previous year and 16.7 percent compared to 2023.
Idoia Galindo, Managing Director of Transfesa, stated:
“This transaction guarantees the continuity and growth of all activities that Transfesa has carried out in Spain so far. In the future, these will be integrated under the umbrella of two large corporate groups: DB Cargo and Boluda Shipping.”
Additionally, innovations such as Lidl’s Tailwind adds four new ports to European route are reshaping logistics strategies across Europe.
