The new eye-tracking camera by Volvo Trucks, mounted above the side display, works alongside the existing forward-facing camera to detect signs of distraction or drowsiness. If inattention is identified, the system issues a pop-up message and warning sound, followed by escalated alerts if the behaviour continues.
The feature activates automatically when the ignition is switched on, but can be manually deactivated in line with EU legal requirements.
“After several hours of driving it can be difficult to stay alert and focused behind the wheel,” said Anna Wrige Berling, Traffic and Product Safety Director at Volvo Trucks. “Our upgraded system is even better at detecting and alerting a driver who shows signs of drowsiness or distraction.”
The eye-tracking function operates at speeds above 18 km/h and already complies with the EU’s General Safety Regulation, including the second phase coming into force in July 2026, which requires Advanced Driver Distraction Warning systems on all new trucks.
The technology will be fitted as standard on Volvo’s FH and FM heavy-duty trucks and FL and FE medium-duty trucks in the EU, UK, Norway and Switzerland, with optional availability in other markets. Outside the EU, Volvo will continue offering the current version of the system, which relies solely on the forward-facing camera.
The FH and FM models, which will feature the enhanced monitoring system, achieved five stars in Euro NCAP’s first heavy truck safety test in 2024.
